Why I write…

Why do I write?  This is the first question in the Writing 101 course and in some ways I think the hardest.

So, why did I sign up for this course, why do I write?  I do this to become a better writer, a faster writer, a more articulate writer.  One who does not get hung-up on being perfect and censoring the version of myself being presented to the outside world.  I write so others know exactly what I’m thinking and feeling – no assumptions or guessing.  It’s so much easier to keep everything inside, but I want to consonantly be growing. Writing is challenging and can be uncomfortable, but the end results are so satisfying.

A moment in time…

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “A Moment in Time.”

The last photo taken was that of my almost 9-year old son discovering something new and to him, one of the most amazing things ever!  Fun Dip!!  Where has this been his whole life and why have I been holding out on him?  It was still in his Halloween candy stash.  (All the chocolate is gone, but I don’t allow other types of candy often.)  He asked for a treat yesterday and I let him pick what he wanted of what was left.  I taught him the proper way of enjoying (digging into) the fun dip.  He was in HEAVEN!

I primarily buy organic food, including treats so the fact that this was in the house was a bit of a fluke to begin with and the fact that I let him eat it surprised my son.  I don’t post pictures of him, but let me say it was one of pure joy.

Re-springing My Step…

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Re-springing Your Step.”

Today’s daily prompt:  Tell us about the last experience you had that left you feeling fresh, energized, and rejuvenated. What was it that had such a positive effect on you?

I don’t know why I’ve found this prompt so difficult at first.  Perhaps just my way of over-thinking most things instead of being able to break them down into their simpler forms.  I’m not able to pinpoint an exact experience, but the times I feel refreshed and energized are after a long workout.  Four-years ago I discovered zumba and it is my go to workout.  I get a high from doing two classes in a row.  It is exhilarating to feed off the energy of those around me and get lost in the music.  I do other workouts too (lifting, running, etc.), but this is where I feel most rejuvenated.

Never give up…

Perseverance.

Mind over body.

In the words of Dory, “Just keep swimming.”

That is what I learned from reading this story about a man who fell off of his boat miles from shore and saved himself by swimming back, thinking of his family and what was important to him.  It is stories like this that makes some my daily problems seem trivial.

Passport arrived…

Woo hoo!  I’ve only been putting off renewing my passport for a few years.  I’m not even sure when it had expired, but I decided now was the time to take care of it.  And, it was quick!  I sent in my application in mid-Dec and already received it back in the mail.  It was faster than some of the rush services.

Not that I have any trips planned, but I now feel free to pick up and go somewhere exciting at the last minute.  I have a long bucket list of places that I want to go.  I’ve seen much of the U.S. but very few places in the world.  One of my regrets is not travelling more in my early 20s when I could have done it relatively inexpensively by staying youth hostels, etc.  Time for me to prioritize my top 5 list and start looking for some good travel deals.

Dear Dream Reader…

I have to admit, I haven’t really thought much about you, my dream reader.  I imagine that you would be here for a few different reasons.  Are you following my crazy fitness and food adventures; trudging along with me in the daily grind; or looking to grow, learn and be the best person you can be.  I hope that I can help to provide some guidance along the way or at least just a few laughs. I want us to be better people together.  And, maybe that means I don’t always have to be in the first row, I can learn that I don’t always have to be perfect.

xoxo, Beth

who I am and why I’m here (take 2)…

So, this is actually my second try at taking blogging 101.  I am still very new to blogging, and honestly to writing in general.  I have always been a voracious reader, but data is my thing.  I’ve been hesitant to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and capture my thoughts.  It makes me feel very vulnerable and that is why I know it is important for me to do now.  I can’t continue to grow as a person without having moments of being uncomfortable.

Vacation…

OMG!  Another draft from August that I  never posted.  I’m now in the middle of my next stay-cation!  I actually accomplished many of the goals on my original list.  So, here’s the updated one:

  1. Finish cleaning out hall closet.  Many items have already been tossed or put/sold on ebay.  Time to finish the project.
  2. Spend time with my son!!  We are going to be seeing a ton of movies this vacation.
  3. Workout, workout, workout – I’ve just started a weight training program and have already seen some nice progress.

From Aug. 2014:

Actually, it is really a stay-cation, and I have a lot of goals for it.

  1. Clean out hall closet.
  2. Clean out bedroom closet.
  3. Sort closet items into keep, give away, throw away and ebay piles.
  4. List items on ebay*.
  5. Workout everyday!  (Ok, I have to admit that this is an easy one for me since I have become addicted to my workouts.)

*If they haven’t sold in 3 months, give them away!  It’s not worth keeping the clutter any longer.  I am a closet hoarder –literally.  You walk into my home and at first glance everything is organized and put away – until you open my closets.
